What a gorgeous day! Praising God for keeping us safe during the storms last night. Praying for those affected by the storms. Members of our church, in Ann Arbor, were affected by the storm. They are safe and minimal damage was done to their house. Many in the Dexter area were not so fortunate. Taking solace in the knowledge that our God is a sovereign God and in control of ALL things!

We finished the Iowa Tests today - a cheer can be heard around the world! Students were troopers and finished well - thank you for all your hard work and effort! Mackinaw Information Letter - 3/14/12

An informational note about Mackinaw went home with you student today. If you did not receive it here is a copy of it:

Dear Parents,

Our trip to Mackinaw is scheduled for May 30, 31, and June 1. Right now I need two pieces of information from you to make final plans for our trip:

1. Whether or not your child will or will not be going with us on our trip. Please fill out the form at the bottom or e-mail me. Final cost of the trip has not yet been finalized. My guess would be between $40-$50 per student plus the cost of two meals while traveling and spending money. Please do not let the cost stand in the way. Let me know if this is a concern.

2. If you would like to chaperone the trip. No siblings are allowed on the trip. Being a chaperone entails responsibilities on the trip:

a. drive on the trip

b. oversee/in charge of assigned students in your hotel room and on our expeditions. (may be the same group as in your room)

c. supporting the teacher by following and abiding by all trip guidelines

If you are interested in being a chaperone please let me know in writing or by e-mail (rlvanderlaan@yahoo.com) by Friday, March 16. This year if more volunteer than we will need chaperones will be chosen by lottery. I will let you know by Monday, March 19 if you were chosen. In past years adults have been able to join the Mackinaw trip as participants; paying for their trip. This option will not be available this year.

I am so excited about this trip. I know the students look forward to the experience and the fun we will have. Remember that this trip is for the students and I am trying to make it a memorable and great experience for them.

In Christ,

Mrs. Rachel Arnold

We couldn't do it without you! Yesterday was a busy day, with a lot going on - as usual. Today we are having our Class Store this afternoon. Students can use the classroom money they have been "earning" to purchase items and coupons for different "privileges" i.e.: stay in from recess one time, not having to do one Math Review lesson, a snack for the whole class, etc. Everyone is very excited about all the possibilities! :)

Monday, February 13

I have a classroom full of scientists! We have been working very hard and focusing on our science project and the scientific process! We have learned that details and being exact are a MUST for any scientist! I know the students are tired of me reminding me of that and telling them that they need to rewrite or reword something so that all the details are included with exact measurements. Despite probable frustration we are on our way with our projects! Less than 4 weeks until the science fair. Don't forget to mark your calendars - March 8 - I can't wait!

Don't forget tomorrow is Valentine's Day and we are revealing our Secret Valentine's and exchanging valentine's in the afternoon. Remember to bring a valentine for everyone in the class!

What a gorgeous day! The warmth and beauty of the sun was wonderful. Once again I actually didn't mind doing recess duty today! :) We talked about our science projects today and am so excited about what the students have come up with. 5th and 6th graders are doing projects in groups of 3 and one group of 4. I assigned the groups today and they had an opportunity to meet in their groups and talk about what they would like to do for their projects. The groups have to choose something that has to do with plants, seeing that is what we are studying in Science this year. I was amazed with some of the ideas they came up with. The majority of the work will be completed here at school, in class. They will conduct their experiments, complete their display boards, etc at school. One of the objectives of this is to encourage the students to work in groups and learn how to work together as a group to complete a project; a true 21st Century Skill! A science project lends itself very well to that. More information will be coming your way!

Another great start to a new week! We began our day joining together for chapel, praising the Lord and learning what it takes to be the greatest. We learned that in order to be the greatest we need to be a servant of all; a challenge for all of us. We were challenged to think of one person today we could serve, what we could do to serve that person and then we shared with our neighbor what that was. Ask your student who they chose to serve and what their act of service was.

Progress Reports were sent home today. If I saw you today, I gave it to you. Otherwise I sent it home with your student. Please sign the form that you received the report and return it by Wednesday, January 11. If you have any questions or want to schedule a conference please contact me.
