Science Friday

In Science class, on Friday, we studied vascular plants and how they "worked". We were able to see first hand just how that happened. We had a celery stalk, a lettuce leaf, and a maple leaf. We put them in colored water and waited to see what happened. It didn't take long to see the colored water going through the stalk and leaves.

We also soaked a maple leaf in rubbing alcohol and by today (Monday) the liquid had a green tint to it. We know that the green color is the chlorophyl from the leaf.

Sara holding the celery stalk. The bottom was already blue and it was going up the stalk!

Claire holding the celery stalk that was limp until we soaked it in water and became firm again.

Pierce with the maple leaf soaking in the colored water. When we looked at it closely, the veins in the leaf were orange!

Anthony with the lettuce leaf. Notice the red colored water going up the leaf!

Rebecca holding the maple leaf soaking in the rubbin alcohol. The experiement took longer than anticipated and we could not see the green from the chlorophyl until Monday morning!

Stay tuned for more pictures and adventures in our classroom!

A Week Into the School Year

Today, Wednesday, marked the one week mark of the school year. Last Wednesday we arrived with our sharpen pencils and spiral notebooks ready for what the new school would bring us. As I reflect on my first week at DCS I can do nothing but thank the Lord first for calling me to be a teacher and, secondly, for allowing me to teach at DCS. I have been so blessed as I began my school year. I loved having parents and students stop by our room before school started to introduce themselves or just to have a peak inside to see what the room looked like.

As we begin our "second week" of the school year I trust and pray that your student will continue to grow in the knowledge and the grace of our Lord. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow night at "Back to School Night"!

Welcome to Our World!

Welcome to our classroom - the 5th/6th grade classroom at Dearborn Christian School! This is our classroom blog where you can find information on what we are doing and will be doing in class. We'll inform you of upcoming events, post pictures of what we are doing, and even, at times, invite you to be a part of our classroom.

We are beginning our first full week of school, getting use to our school routine. We have started all of our subjects and are excited about all that we will learn this year. Keep checking back for updates and information as we continue on our journey through 5th and 6th grade!
